Sept. 15, 2020
Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S. will take place over the period of Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. VMLY&R’s Miami office, in partnership with the agency’s ILLUME (BIPOC) Powered by DEI group, created a public service announcement aimed at the Spanish-speaking community with a simple message — “Wear a Mask.”
Research by the Miami team discovered that very little information about COVID-19 is provided in Spanish. And what has been translated is minimal in comparison to what’s available in English. With COVID-19 impacting essential workers — many of whom are Spanish-speaking with high-contact jobs — it is unacceptable to continue this conversation without them.
There are lots of ways you can support Hispanic Heritage Month:
- Support the social media campaign by sharing a pic of you wearing your mask and tagging it #UsoLaMiaPor.
- Visit the Wear a Mask site, www.usolamiapor.org, to learn how the narrative around COVID-19 can be expanded to include Hispanic and Latinx communities.
- Identify and support an organization working to support the Hispanic and Latinx communities — possibly volunteering with them on Foundation Day, Sept. 24.
- Consider using AmazonSmile to benefit a local organization with your Amazon purchases.
