Content Director

VMLY&R is looking to recruit a mid-senior Content Director to join our dynamic and fast-paced team, working on one of South Africa’s biggest fashion, home and beauty retailers. Our content director is the bridge between strategy and implementation – ensuring that content delivers on the overarching digital strategy and resonates with audiences of different shapes, styles and locations. Content direction

  • Fashion and beauty trend research and forecasting: relevant for the South African market and individual target markets for different labels
  • Generate strategically aligned ideas in brainstorms with team members
  • Plan shoots for social media content to reach specific objectives. This includes:
  • Shot lists: What are we shooting and how
  • Channel plans: Where is the content going and when
  • Copywriting: Write copy that is fresh, on-brand and right for the social media platform
  • Develop editorial guidelines based on best practice, research, strategy and analytics

Platform expertise

  • Optimise content based on learnings from reports and the social media community
  • Stay abreast of social media trends, formats, algorithms and platform updates
  • Have a good understanding of social media analytics and media
  • Get to grips with social commerce and how content (social, newsletters, blogs, influencers) drive sales


  • Liaise directly with clients and develop a relationship of trust and collaboration
  • Collaborate with strategy, creative, media and data teams to update social media playbooks based on best practice, analytics and strategy
  • Brief social media managers to create content plans that are strategically aligned and are of high quality


  • Co-create engagement/conversation plans for influencers and live events
  • Identify relevant tactical opportunities and briefs data and creative teams accordingly


  • You will be responsible for working with social media managers to create and execute high-quality content plans
  • You will need to guide and train them in the art of content and editorial direction


  • Minimum of five years' experience in a similar position
  • An eye (or two) for fashion and beauty and an overall sense of style – Someone with a fashion/beauty editorial background
  • A hunger for trends, always looking at things differently and seeing innovative approaches to social content
  • A natural storyteller – Can simplify complex strategies and tell a compelling story
  • Attention to detail – From visuals and copy to time and targets, the content director is responsible for bringing ideas to life in a strategic and high-quality way
  • Team player - This is a highly collaborative role that requires teamwork, patience, good time management and the ability to motivate and inspire team members
